Remove Old Door & Frame
Carefully take out the old door, trim and frame using a pry bar and utility knife.
This general guide covers the basic tools and sequence for removing an existing door, preparing the opening, setting the new unit, insulating and sealing it.

Carefully take out the old door, trim and frame using a pry bar and utility knife.
Check for damage or rot. The opening should be square and 1/2" to 3/4" wider than the new door frame.
Add flashing tape along the sill and apply a generous bead of exterior caulk where the new threshold will sit.
Tilt the door unit into place, centering it in the opening. Rest the bottom on the sill caulk.
Use a level to ensure the door is plumb and square. Shim behind hinges and the latch side until evenly spaced.
Fasten the door frame through the shims using screws or nails, starting with the hinge side. Check for even reveals.
Open and close the door to ensure it swings smoothly and seals properly against the weatherstrip.
Fill gaps around the frame with low-expansion spray foam or fiberglass insulation.
Apply caulk along exterior joints and paint or stain the door as needed.
